INVITATION

On behalf of the Australian National Organising Committee, I have the honour to invite you to participate in the Xth World Water Congress of the International Water Resources Association (IWRA). This Congress will be only the second to be held in the southern hemisphere and promises to be a landmark event in the water calendar as the word moves into the 21st century.

The Congress deliberations are to be structured around four main themes:

  • Sharing the waters of the earth
  • Sustainable water use policy and practice
  • Protecting the resource
  • River basin management

These themes will be addressed in a series of parallel streams to provide opportunities for scientific papers, case studies and special sessions on topics ranging from conflict management and water diplomacy, stressed river systems, and the promise of technology, to the El Nino phenomenon, and the allocation of water rights to indigenous peoples.

However, the Congress will be more than a collection of scholarly papers. It will include a wide-ranging exhibition of technology and innovations in the practice and business of water resources development. This will provide a platform for demonstration to the world of Australia's expertise in water resources and environmental management.

The Congress is designed to appeal to a broad sampling of interests in the water industry, both the private and public sector - water businesses, engineering firms, agricultural groups, administrators, water users in the irrigation, energy and industrial sectors, researchers across disciplinary borders, and community groups. The Congress and associated study tours will show delegates how Australia deals with water issues, both in the cities and the "outback".

The beautiful city of Melbourne, Australia is at its best in March as late summer turns to autumn, and the weather and the city's attractions present a magnificent display for Congress delegates and their partners.

Be assured of a really warm welcome, a stimulating and rewarding Congress, and a memorable visit 'down under' to Melbourne, 2000.

    Chair

    MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

The International Water Resources Association is proud to announce that its Xth Congress is taking place in Melbourne, Australia. On behalf of the Executive Board I invite you to actively participate in the most important event related to water in the year 2000.

IWRA is a not-for-profit organisation congregating more than 1,000 highly qualified professionals in the area of integrated water resources planning and management. The Association has members in more than 100 countries and for the last 30 years has been promoting better water management through the integration of its technical, sociological, economic, environmental and political dimensions.

The Melbourne Congress will address as its main theme, the sharing of the world waters. This is certainly one of the most important issues in the dawn of the new millennium.

Countries facing water scarcity today will tend to have severe problems in the near future due to increasing demands. As a commodity of vital value water should be shared among those who have surplus and those who are in need.

The Congress will allow experts to exchange innovative thinking on this subject and many other important related issues for the benefit of mankind. I urge you to come to Melbourne and contribute to the advancement of the water resources of the world.

    Ben Braga
    President
