New treatments of stress induced depression

  • Prof Graham Burrows AO KCSJ, Department of Psychiatry, University of Melbourne, Austin Health, Australia
  • This paper will discuss the changing face of psychopharmacology over recent years, in raelationship to Stress, Anxiety and Depression. In particular it will examine the newer medications that are available now to assist the clinician in the better management of affective disorders, including some compounds that are still in development phase. Early studies with Agomelatine, Duloxatione and other preparations are highly promising. In many units around the world, the use of the older preparations of the tricylic antidepressants, monoamine oxidase inhibitors and even the early SSRIs and related compounds have been superseded. This paper will discuss the direction in which the newer compounds are taking clinicians in offering enhanced treatment options for affective disorders. The management of depressive disorders and its relationship to dementia will be included in these newer approaches.
