Invitation from the Convenor

It is my pleasure to invite you to attend the Biennial Conference for South Pacific Educators in Vision Impairment (SPEVI). This conference is the culmination of two years work by the Conference Planning Committee. This event is the principle professional development activity for educators in vision impairment, whether it be in the area of early intervention, primary, secondary, tertiary education or parenting. This year, we are fortunate to have three international keynote speakers, one in each of the three strands running through the program. These speakers are all authors and researchers, interested in professional training for teachers and active in tertiary education and in practical aspects of the profession. More information on the keynote speakers is contained further on in this booklet.

Each day of the week has options available in the three strands of low vision, Braille users and multiply impaired. It is anticipated that there will be something each day for everyone. The afternoons are designed to be of a more practical nature with workshops. These should provide less formal opportunities to exchange ideas and challenge old concepts and thoughts.

Wednesday has been highlighted as a day for parents. Each of the keynote speakers will present on this day so parents have the opportunity to listen to their ideas and gain from their contribution. In addition, on this day there will be special arrangements for child-care, including arrangements for multiply impaired children, on the premises.

The Radisson Resort Gold Coast is an excellent venue and as the only conference on site, the conference facilities will be for our exclusive use. Accommodation comes at an exceptional price for the Gold Coast in peak holiday times. The surrounds of the buildings are exquisite with golf course and tennis courts, pools, gymnasium and spectacular views of the hinterland mountains. Broadbeach is only seven minutes drive from the conference venue and the hotel shuttle runs regularly to and from the coast.
