Abstract for presentation at Global Social Work 2004

Theorising Organisational Culture and Change

  • Dr Michael Wearing, University of New South Wales, Australia
  • This paper will review several theoretical themes from traditional, critical and post-modern approaches to organisational theory. It will suggest strategic ways in which such theory can help social work understand its identity and purpose as a profession in contemporary period pf managerialism and neo-liberalism. Key developments in this theory of the last twenty years around power, networks, knowledge, accountability, management and control, and decision making are addressed to highlight how theories of organisational culture and change can contribute to our understanding of the dynamics of practice. Some case examples are used to highlight the need to appreciate complex practice realities in the organisational context. The conclusion will suggest that a blending of macro and micro theories best contextualises such practice for the contemporary period.
