On the Hunt: Feminism Dead or Alive?
This workshop will draw on experiences of teaching on a small regional campus with a student cohort from across a wide region of both New South Wales and Victoria, with most students coming from sparsely populated towns. Predominantly students come to their university experience not always knowing what to expect, so to encourage reading and to present classroom materials in the more traditional manner does not usually engage their interest.
One of the frustrations of the poast ten years is the diminishing prescence of overt feminist material, or material is used that seems devoid of the 'F' word. It is therefore surprising when students claim that feminism is 'over the top' in the curriculum and when questioned as to what they understand of feminism it seems very little of the facts are evident.
It is my aim to provide an overview of how and where feminism is located in the Bachelor of Social Work course in which I teach and to tease out ideas from workshop participants as to how they are dealing with what has become a worldwide phenomenon. This workshop will provide a much needed space where feminist ideas can be exchanged and meaningful dialogue entered into.
