The occupational stress of social worker

  • This summary is about a research that’s being realized in the Master Degree’s Social Science Program, in the Ponta Grossa State University, and it has as object of research the occupational stress of the social worker. The importance of fulfilling a study in this area is the fact that there are few reflections related to the professional field of the Social Work. Another point to consider is the necessity to understand better the professional’s reality in facing the quotidian, where the potential stressors present themselves more effectively. We can consider the stress at work as a unique and individual experience to each person, and it is associated with negative feelings that are unleashed by different sources of stress found in different environments of work. It’s important to emphasize that the stress attains all kind of professions, but it hits in a particular form the professionals that have a direct contact with people, as the social worker does. The research considers the following problems: the discussion about the stress’ potential in different professions; the questions about the bigger or the smaller of the potential stress in the social work profession, as the particular nature of the job’s field; the possible sources of stress inherent to the practice of the social worker and the strategies used for this professional to manage the stress. The objectives of this study are: to show up the mainly existents studies, the different authors’ contribution in the occupational stress area; to identify the symptomatology that the inquired person presents, evaluating if he has symptoms of stress, the type of symptom existent (somatic or psychological), the stress’s stage; to verify and analyze the determining of stress to the inquired person and the forms that they use to face this phenomenon. To the realization of this research are being used as sources of data collects: books, dissertations, theses, magazines, newspapers, and interviews with specialists of the area. The research has as central subjects of study the social workers entitled to the Social Assistance of Ponta Grossa city, Paraná State, Brazil.
