  • Broken Hill is a remote industrial community in Australia's outback. It is struggling with the downturn of the mining and mineral resource wealth on which the community was built. It has a great history in the development of Australia's social institutions and industrial relations yet this city is at risk of disappearing. What are the strengths of Broken Hill and it's people that enable and restrict the community to demonsrate a capacity for longevity and sustainability through this new period of crisis? How does the social capital of Broken Hill compare with that of other communities and what are the lessons for other rural or remote communities going through major social and economic change? This research results from an ARC Linkage Grant involving the University of technology Sydney, the people of Broken Hill in partnership and Family and Community Services.
