As we enter the third millennium, it has been instructive to reflect on the advances in the geo-engineering sciences which have occurred over the past 50 or 60 years. The disciplines of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, engineering geology and geotechnical engineering have come of age and are recognised by our peers in other professions. Although we have three international societies generally representing these disciplines, together with a number of more specialist international groups, all have a common goal-to foster and facilitate the practice and knowledge relating to our disciplines.

Recognising the synergies between the interests of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) and the International Association of Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG), in 1995 the three incumbent Presidents promoted the concept of an international conference to bring together the three disciplines.

The conference is being organised for and on behalf of the Australian Geomechanics Society, and is underwritten by the Institution of Engineers, Australia.
