Perth

Perth skyline

Way out west on the other side of the red Australian outback is Perth - a glistening, shining modern city, perched on the rim of the Indian Ocean. Perth is where the Australian love of outdoors life takes on a new dimension and in this southwest corner of Australia, the temperature creates a perfect scene for getting on with life.

The beautiful Swan River cuts its way from the historic port of Fremantle and fans out to a great expanse of blue water on which the city neatly sits. From the natural setting of Kings Park, high above the city buildings, the pristine, contemporary city basks in a seemingly endless flood of generous Australian sunshine. To the south and west, long white stretches of sandy beaches allow the surf to continuously roll in and create a much sought-after summer lifestyle. Why wouldn’t you be outdoors?

With wide open spaces and the bluest of skies, Perth truly is a beautiful city and it prides itself on the way it looks. Dressed well in a coat of handsome modern buildings and topped with a fringe of exquisite native vegetation, the city projects a proud and strong image. Perth is more than just a good looking city.

Weekends in Fremantle, 20 kilometres from the city, are big! The heritage port buildings have been converted and now house so many microbreweries, restaurants, bars, clubs and cafes - the list seems endless. There are markets, festivals and entertainment in and around the port and a weekend quickly disappears.

From Fremantle, an hour’s boat ride out into the Indian Ocean and you’ve landed at Rottnest Island, jumping with the cute little native marsupial – the Quokka. ‘Rotto’ as it’s known by locals, is a great place to spend a few days or just an afternoon sipping a few drinks by the pool.

Inland from Perth is the Swan Valley, home to the Western Australian wine industry and a popular driving and wine exploration destination. Over 40 vineyards carpet the picturesque Valley floor and are run by interesting local characters, more than willing to share their love of wine with explorers. Just driving through the countryside is pleasure enough.

When the Fremantle Doctor (the gentle sea breeze which rolls in late every afternoon) blows the heat of the day away, it’s time to explore the haunts of Northbridge with the city’s best hot nightspots and find some serious fun. It won’t be hard. The streets are lined with clubs, pubs, bars, cafes and the entire place pumps until the early hours. There’s only one thing Perth people love more than their outdoors life – and that’s the nightlife.

You’re going to love Perth. It’s the city where you can find something different to do every minute – inside or out.
