To celebrate 400 Years of Mapping in Australia, the Conference Organising Committee will create an exhibition of facsimilies of the earliest maps of Australia, as well as a number of maps deemed to be of significance in the history of the mapping of the continent. Well known members of the spatial science community have been asked to choose a map of particular importance or interest to them.In 1606, the small Dutch ship Duyfken from Banda, Indonesia (under the command of Willem Janszoon), explored and chartered part of the coast of now Western Australia. Captain Janszoon was the first European to map and record Australia in history. After leaving Banda on 18 November 1605, at the end of March 1606 VOC Captain Willem Janszoon and his crew, charted about 300km of the west coast of Cape York Peninsula in Queensland. They were the first Europeans evidently known to have landed in Australia. This was the beginning of maritime mapping of Australia.

Data Manager (Spatial), Tropical Population Health Unit, Queensland Health Alistair's interest in spatial information began as a child, as former surveyor and family friend Len Beadell regaled his adventures surveying and constructing highways through Outback Australia (including the Gunbarrel Highway). The map of Australia on the kitchen wall was soon full of highways, atomic weapons test sites and rocket ranges - much to Alistair's fascination. Alistair's first job outside school was as a surveyor's assistant on the Nullarbor, helping to survey a fibre-optic cable route from Adelaide to Perth in 1994 using the relatively new Omnistar GPS differential beacon and some 'high-tech' 8 channel Garmin receivers. He has since immersed himself in the world of spatial information, and is currently enjoying the challenges he faces managing spatial information within Queensland Health.
