Maintaining Competency and CPD

  • Ian Marshall, SSI Queensland, Australia
  • In a changing, increasingly complex world with rapid technological advances the need for lifelong learning is compelling. Competency describes the skills, knowledge and experience that are expected to be applied for a person to operate effectively in the workplace and to meet community, regulatory and client expectations. The emphasis is on outcomes: what people are able to do and the effectiveness of their actions in a range of contexts. With the ever increasing changes that are occurring in society, technology, methods of working, etc individuals and organisations must undertake continuous learning to maintain relevance. This presentation explores the elements of competency, the importance of and reasons for maintaining competence and the broad range of avenues available to achieve an acceptable level of competence. In particular Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities will be reviewed as one of the means of developing and maintaining relevance and currency of competencies and knowledge within and across the specialisations comprising the spatial sciences.
