Abstract for presentation at Combined 5th Trans Tasman Survey Conference and 2nd Queensland Spatial Industry Conference 2006

The Status and Future of Australia's National Geospatial Reference System

  • Mr Gary Johnston, Geoscience Australia, Australia
  • Australia's National Geospatial Reference System (NGRS) is the coordinate foundation for all positioning applications and spatially relatedsciences. In the past the NGRS has seen an order of magnitude improvement in accuracy, approximately once per decade. Australia is now poised to make the next order of magnitude improvement in positioning accuracy. The NGRS, or geodetic infrastructure as it is more commonly known, has evolved from providing control for the continental mapping programs to beinga fundamental component of many fields of science and supporting an ever increasing number of industries. The proposed improvement in accuracy will revolutionise many scientific endeavours and provide Australian industry with the spatial foundation on which to conduct its business into the next decade.
This presentation will discuss plans for the enhancement of the NGRS and draw linkage to many of the science and industry sectors that will benefit.
