Demography - A Spatial Science

  • Kenneth Melchert, Office of Economic and Statistical Research, Queensland Treasury, Australia
  • The spatial sciences encompass a range of disciplines including surveying, geographic information systems, cartography and remote sensing. Demography is a spatial science discipline which is often over-looked and under-utilised by the broader community of spatial professionals. This presentation will provide an overview of the demography spatial science discipline, and will outline its spatial components and the information available at each level of the demographic spatial hierarchy. Examples will focus on Regional North Queensland and highlight data available at the regional level. Further this presentation will demonstrate how as spatial information users we can utilise demographic information to enhance our analysis, development, modelling, planning and research. This presentation will also cover how we can access demographic and socio-economic information through innovative on-line tools developed by the Office of Economic and Statistical Research.
