** Where are the Graduates?

  • John Hannah, University of Otago, New Zealand
  • The surveying profession in Australia, and to a lesser extent in New Zealand, appears to be on the cusp of a skills crisis of monumental proportions. Why is it that with starting salaries for four-year graduates now more than competitive with those offered in other professions and at their highest levels ever, many surveying degree programmes are struggling to attract students? Can any lessons be learned from the fact that while the undergraduate BSurv degree programme at the University of Otago in New Zealand is overflowing with students, many of its counterpart programmes in Australia are in the opposite position? Is marketing, or alternatively, the failure to market effectively, the significant issue? Do factors other than marketing significantly influence the picture? Can some existing programmes survive? What can be done about this potential skills crisis? This paper not only discusses in detail these and the associated problems but also suggests possible solutions.
