Information Queensland Update
Information Queensland (IQ) was launched in 2004 to improve public access to government information via the internet. In its first year of operation, IQ developed a publicly available online 'information' atlas which gives Queenslanders quick and easy access to government information -www.information.qld.gov.au.
Within three years, the website will be extended to include all appropriate information held by government departments-from population trends to pay-as-you-go information services. Private or personal information will not be made available to the public. While the atlas is the most visible component of IQ, the majority of IQ's work to date has involved identifying and developing commonly required infrastructure across government which supports services such as the atlas. Examples include address validation and gazetteer services, merchant server facilities and authentication/authorisation services.
The integrated nature of IQ will not only reduce the need for agencies to provide separate, often duplicated infrastructure such as those mentioned above, but agencies will also benefit from substantial cost savings and improved service quality through the sharing, re-using and greater availability of information, computer applications and infrastructure.
This paper and the Information Queensland session will detail the current challenges and future directions for this critical information management initiative.
