International Brain Injury Association

Founded in 1993, the International Brain Injury Association (IBIA) was created in response to the growing demand from professionals and advocates throughout the world for collaboration and more information on all aspects of brain injury, from prevention to long-term care issues.

The IBIA works to develop positive relations and interactions between individuals, families, groups, organizations, institutions, diverse cultures and nations. The IBIA strives to provide international leadership for creative solutions to the issues associated with brain injury.


Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine

The Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine (AFRM) is a Faculty division of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP). Rehabilitation Medicine has been recognised as a principal specialty in Australia since 1976. The AFRM, which provides a high calibre training program in the specialty of Rehabilitation Medicine for doctors in Australia and New Zealand, is also recognised as the principal advisory body to the Australian Medical Council (AMC) on Rehabilitation Medicine.

The Faculty, headquartered in the RACP offices in Sydney, has active Branches in most Australian states and in New Zealand, with a total of around 260 Fellows in active practice. The Faculty's role as a higher educational institution is central to its Mission "to train, accredit and support medical practitioners in the management of disability and handicap arising out of illness and injury".

In order to promote the advancement of knowledge in the field of Rehabilitation Medicine the AFRM holds a national conference each year as part of its continuing professional development program.


Australian Society for the Study of Brain Impairment

In 2005, the Australian Society for the Study of Brain Impairment will be celebrating its 28th anniversary. The Society was formed in 1978 to foster interest in research and education concerning the effects of brain impairment. With a strong emphasis on clinical and applied research the society has maintained a multi-disciplinary focus over the years attracting clinicians from all health disciplines (neuropsychologists, psychologists, social workers, rehabilitation specialists, speech pathologists, occupational therapists etc). One of the Society's main activities is an annual conference which attracts the best of Australian and New Zealand research and hosts internationally renowned speakers. The 2005 conference will be held co-jointly with the International Brain Injury Association and the Australian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine. In addition to the annual conference, a vibrant continuing education program of workshops is also conducted. In 2000, ASSBI launched its own journal Brain Impairment that has proven a highly successful venture, publishing high quality research and reviews in clinically relevant areas.
