Abstract for presentation at 6th World Congress on Brain Injury

The Role of the Family and The Encephalitis Society in Recovery from Acquired Brain Injury

  • Ava Easton, The Encephalitis Society, United Kingdom
  • Encephalitis is caused by infection, usually viral, or by autoimmune diseases affecting the brain. Acquired Brain Injury, the severity of which will vary, is a common consequence of Encephalitis.
Using case histories and examples, the workshop will present the current methods and approaches facilitated by the Society, family members of the society and other community support systems to meet the needs of people affected by encephalitis and acquired brain injury, and their families. The workshop will facilitate the participants in sharing and discussing their own experiences (be they professional or personal). The participants will then consider the benefits and any pitfalls identified of such approaches and may identify strategies for improvement or new approaches, where they may exist. This will be examined by considering participant's own strategies, ideas and methods, with a view to maximising outcome for both people affected and their family members.
The contents and outcomes of the workshop will subsequently be written up and circulated to all participants along with the contact details of those that participated (with their permission). Each participant will be provided with a workshop pack.
