Conducting Rigorous Efficacy and Effectiveness Research: Challenges and Solutions
Few interventions used in TBI rehabilitation have been rigorously tested for their efficacy and effectiveness. There are many challenges in conducting rigorous efficacy research in this area, including difficulty defining the active ingredients of non-pharmacologic treatments, difficulty defining the population most appropriate for the treatment, difficulty determining outcome measures that are both sensitive to treatment effects and relevant to real-world function, and difficulty identifying meaningful comparison conditions. This presentation will discuss the obstacles that stand in the way of research that can help to demonstrate the impact of rehabilitation interventions, and will address some of the techniques that can be used to overcome those obstacles.
