A Pilot Investigation of the Applicability of the Signposts Program for Families with Children with ABI
Objective
Children sustaining brain injury are at significant risk of developing persistent serious behavioural and social difficulties. This project investigated the applicability of the Signposts for Building Better Behaviour program to assist parents to anticipate, prevent and manage the difficult behaviours of their children with an ABI.
Method
This was a qualitative study in which parents and professionals were interviewed about the acceptability and appropriateness of the aims, content, mode of delivery and instructional strategies of the program. In addition, case study methodology was employed with five parents who were approached to implement the program with their children at home with telephone support from a practitioner.
Results
The opinions of parents and professionals will be presented, demonstrating high levels of acceptability. In addition, there will be a case study analysis of the implementation of the program by two of the parents involved. The paper concludes with a description of the adaptations to the Signposts program required to better meet the needs of families of children with ABI?
