Seven years ago my life was altered irrevocably in a fatal car accident. Severe Brain Injury has impacted all aspects of my life including a promising elite sporting and academic career. Beliefs about ability, motivation and hope for a future have been challenged. Often it seemed easier to give up than pursue recovery. Persisting with my studies despite fatigue, chronic headaches and challenging attitudes, has enabled me to gain employment as a Rehabilitation Counsellor. I am now in a position to help others return to work and study.
Barely six months after the accident that nearly ended my life I recommenced University to complete undergraduate and postgraduate study, which has facilitated recovery and provided opportunity. State and International scholarships have provided financial incentive and essential motivation, as has involvement in sport, the Brain Injury Network of South Australia, Australian Safe Communities Foundation and Presidency of the University Students with Disabilities Association.
My whole value system has changed, along with my life ambitions. While my cognitive processes have altered, I faced a progressive journey through rebuilding physical and cognitive function that has been enhanced through experience and resilience, complementing medical treatment. A coordinated process of support and establishing independence has facilitated success. Inspirational autobiographies, networking with other survivors, positive reinforcement, family support and public speaking has also impacted positively. Even simple interventions have made a practical difference. Local and international initiatives provide opportunity for a coordinated rehabilitation service including non-medical interventions, effective communication and emphasis on individual experiences.
