Abstract for presentation at 6th World Congress on Brain Injury

Anything is Possible

  • Andrew Harrison, Australia
  • Objective: This talk would benefit people interested in the following workshops: Brain Injury outcomes, Return to Work and Study, and the role of the family and other support systems in Brain Injury Management. The questions that are answered pertain to the above workshop themes. ABI is an emerging disability with little service provision, possibly because it occurs with a sudden onset. This results in many problems, especially the ones involving the family. I note that there are no Brain Injury sufferers listed at the moment as making any presentation, and although I realise why this is so, I firmly believe I have an excellent presentation with which to convey information of Brain Injury outcomes.
Method: I will use the video tape that was made of me during the entire length of my stay at the TAC rehabilitation centre, a television program documentary, and of other significant events post ABI. (I have had it professionally edited so it is very acceptable) My talk is well-rehearsed to go along with this tape, which is stopped at various points to add important comments. At the end of my talk (duration 30 minutes) I answer any questions from my audience.
Results: The specific rehabilitation for my brain injury, the family care, and the support of the wider community (work, ABI support services) has enabled me to undertake studies, live completely independently, and enjoy a normal life as good as anyone. I will give information on the many things that I witnessed and learnt during my recovery, on to a larger, specifically interested, audience.
May I also add that I have given this talk many times to disability and return to work groups, and have many letters of commendation. Should you be ready to listen you will not be disappointed.
    My brain injury was such:
    Mid brain haemorrhage
    Subtentorial subdural haemorrhage
    Multiple pectechial haemorrhages
Hemiparisis (paralysed on my left side)
Therefore I know I have a great deal of information to impart.
