Invited Speakers to ASIEM

Dr. Albert van Gennip, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Dr. van Gennip graduated as a biochemist in 1970, became a certified and registered clinical chemist in 1976 and obtained his Ph.D degree in 1981
(Mathematics and Science) by thesis: "Screening for disorders of purine and pyrimidine metabolism: a chromatographic approach". From 1970 - 1988
he was head of the laboratory of the Emma Children's Hospital in Amsterdam
and since 1988 he has been head of the Laboratory for Genetic Metabolic
Diseases of the Academic Medical Centre, Departments for Paediatrics and Clinical Chemistry, University of Amsterdam. Dr. van Gennip is an acknowledged world authority on disorders of purine and pyrimidine metabolism. Since 1981 he has been the principal investigator of a large number of research projects in the field of inborn errors of metabolism and cancer and has over 200 publications in these areas. Dr. van Gennip has been active nationally and internationally on various Medical Research Councils and Expert Committees. He was the originator of national and European diagnostic proficiency test schemes and member of the Board of Trustees, Executive Committee and Scientific Advisory Board of ERNDIM
for many years. He was also the originator of an education program for a certified sub-specialisation for Inborn Errors of Metabolism in the Netherlands as part of the education for Clinical Chemistry.


Dr. Susan Waisbren, Harvard Medical School and Children's Hospital, Boston

Dr. Waisbren completed her Ph.D at Berkeley University, California in 1978 and has worked as the psychologist for the Inborn Errors of Metabolism Clinic at the Children's Hospital, Boston since that time. She is a co-director and co-ordinator of psychology follow up of the Maternal PKU Collaborative Study.
Susan has also been the Principal Investigator on a large number of research studies including the neruopsychological outcomes for children with PKU and other inborn errors of metabolism; the development and assessment of the expanded newborn screening for metabolic disorders and the development of a Comprehensive Peer Support Program. Her current research interests are the development of Resource Centres and Programs, the expanded newborn screening for metabolic disorders as part of an integrated health service and the ongoing Maternal PKU Collaborative Study.
