More than half of the 430 members nationwide are physicians, but the society includes general practitioners, academics, researchers and psychiatrists. The Society is involved in training physicians as geriatricians, the promotion of research into medicine of the aged and influencing government policy on aged care programs. The highlight of the academic calendar is the Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) of the Society. Attended by more than 200 delegates each year, the Meeting is held in different locations around Australia. Attracting notable international and national speakers, it is of interest to all Australian and New Zealand practitioners involved in Aged Care. The 2003 ASM is being held at Crown Towers in Melbourne, and promises to combine an exciting academic program with the many attractions of Melbourne. The Novartis Visiting Professor is Professor Ken Rockwood of Canada, a dynamic and motivational speaker whose main interest is frailty, but who has also been internationally published in the fields of delirium and dementia. The Servier Visiting Professor is Paul Mitchell from the Blue Mountains Eye Project, whose session on vision will form part of a forum of sensory deprivation in the Elderly. Other sessions will focus on the prevention of various medical disorders, dementia and updates in general medicine. Themes for 2003 Scientific Meeting
