THE CONFERENCE: The biennial Australasian Structural Engineering Conference has become the leading forum in Australasia for Structural Engineers to share knowledge and explore advances in structural technology, application and design. ASEC 2001 represents a particular milestone in our history, as it is the first to be held in the new millennium. The conference is being organised by the Structural College of the Institution of Engineers Australia with the support and endorsement of the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand. To emphasise the close working relationship recently forged between these three Institutions, the programme on the middle day of the conference has been named in honour of Dr Oleg Kerensky, a former President of the Institution of Structural Engineers, with the theme of "Bridges to the Future". The Institution of Structural Engineers established the International Kerensky Conferences as a continuing tribute to this outstanding man who is remembered not just for his contribution to the theory and practice of engineering, but also as an ambassador for friendship and goodwill around the world. Previous International Kerensky Conferences have been held in London (1988), Glasgow (1990), Singapore (1994) and Hong Kong (1997).
