Invitation from President

I welcome ASCIA members to the 14th Annual Scientific Meeting at the Sheraton Towers Hotel, Southbank and the one-day satellite meeting at the Sebel Lodge Yarra Valley. The organising committee has developed an outstanding program. The conference is to be held in association with the Diagnostic Immunology Discussion Group (DIDG). Many ASCIA members belong to this group and many of us share common interests with this group.

Scientific presentations over a broad range of topics are planned - food allergy, the origins of the atopic state, autoimmunity and diagnostic testing in immunology, and immunotherapy for allergic diseases. Hugh Sampson, Hans Joergen Malling and Marvin Fritzler are the visiting overseas speakers.

There will be two parallel satellite meetings. An autoimmune workshop will be held in association with the DIDG concentrating on diagnostic testing in immunology. The "Current concepts in allergen immunotherapy" meeting will look at cutting edge developments in immunotherapy.

To complement the excellent scientific program is an enticing social program. The welcome reception will be held at the Sheraton and the ASCIA dinner at the Melbourne Aquarium .I understand there is an even an 18 hole golf course at the Sebel Lodge where the satellite meetings are to be held.

I warmly welcome you to what promises to be a most interesting and inspiring meeting.

David Gillis
President ASCIA

Invitation to Participate

The ASCIA ASM will be held from Friday 10 October - Sunday 12 October 2003 at the Sheraton Towers Hotel, Southbank (note the time change due to the AFL Grand Final in Melbourne), with a one-day satellite meeting at the Sebel Lodge Yarra Valley on Monday October 13 2003.

Themes of the 2003 Conference are food allergy, the origins of the atopic state, autoimmunity and diagnostic testing in immunology, and immunotherapy for allergic diseases.

The conference this year will be held in association with the Diagnostic Immunology Discussion Group (DIDG), many of whom are members of ASCIA, so the common interests are obvious.

The venue for the 2003 Satellite Meeting, the Sebel Lodge Hotel, is located within an hour of Melbourne's City Centre in the famous Victorian wine-growing region, the Yarra Valley. The Hotel boasts excellent accommodation, conference facilities and a Jack Nicklaus designed 18-hole golf course. The satellite meeting will consist of 2 streams. There will be an auto-immunity stream known as "St George in the Yarra Valley" which will be in association with the DIDG and focus on diagnostic testing in immunology. The other concurrent stream will be "Current concepts in allergen immunotherapy" which will look at scientific and clinical aspects of immunotherapy in the 21st century, with input (among others) from both Hugh Sampson and Hans Joergen Malling.

In keeping with previous years, the social program is an important and enjoyable part of the meeting. The conference dinner will be held at the Melbourne Aquarium with an address by Professor Suzanne Cory of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute.

On behalf of the organising committee, I am excited to be welcoming members of ASCIA to the ASM in Melbourne and hope it will be an outstanding conference with enough breadth to satisfy the diversity of interests among the ASCIA membership.

Invitation from the Diagnostic Immunology Discussion Group

The committee of the Diagnostic Immunology Discussion Group (DIDG) is very excited about joining with ASCIA for their 2003 meeting in Melbourne. The DIDG began in the early 1990s, and has grown from a small group of scientists who wanted to create a forum to discuss local issues, to the much larger group today which is represented by scientists, clinicians and trade representatives. In addition, there has been considerable overlap and interaction between similar groups in all states of Australia as well as many of the laboratories in New Zealand.

The DIDG group is actively involved in the promotion of national standardisation of Auto Immune testing and has a vital interest in immunology and the interface between the clinical condition and the laboratory's role in providing accurate and informative diagnostic testing.
