Dr Robert Moellering

Dr Robert Moellering is Shields Warren-Mallinckrodt Professor of Medical Research at Harvard Medical School. Until July 2005, he served as the Herrman L. Blumgart Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and Physician-in-Chief and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston. During that period he was also President and CEO of Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians at BIDMC. Trained as an infectious diseases specialist, Dr. Moellering has been actively involved in laboratory research for the past 35 years carrying out numerous studies on the mechanism of action and mechanisms of resistance to antimicrobial agents and his work is reported in over 380 publications in scientific journals. He is a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, Master of the American College of Physicians, and has been elected to membership in the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. He is Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, Editor of Infectious Disease Clinics of North America, and Editor of the European Journal of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. Dr. Moellering has received many prestigious awards, including an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Valparaiso University, the Garrod Medal from the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, the Feldman Award and the Finland Award from the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the Hoechst-Roussel Award from the American Academy for Microbiology. Most recently, he is the 2006 recipient of the Maxwell Finland Award for Scientific Achievement from the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases.

Dr Dominique Monnet

Dr Dominique Monnet received his degrees in pharmacy and clinical microbiology from the University of Lyons (France), and then obtained further education as a hospital infection control specialist and epidemiologist. Since 1999, he has been coordinating the surveillance of antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial consumption in humans in Denmark as part of the Danish Integrated Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring and Research Programme (DANMAP, http://www.danmap.org). His research focuses on the surveillance of antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial consumption, the relationship between consumption of antimicrobials and resistance, and the factors that affect antimicrobial usage, both in hospitals and in primary health care. Dominique is the Head of the Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Unit at the Statens Serum Institut in Denmark.

Dr Peter Colman

Dr Peter Colman trained in physics at the University of Adelaide before embarking on a career in structural biology with special interests in protein-protein and protein-ligand interactions. Whilst at CSIRO, his studies on the influenza virus antigen neuraminidase led to the first atomic resolution structure of a viral antigen complexed with an antibody and also to the discovery that neuraminidase is a drug target for influenza therapy and prophylaxis. He is currently at The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute for Medical Research.
