Joanne M Bargman MD FRCPC

Dr Bargman received her MD cum laude from the University of Toronto, and completed postdoctoral studies in Melbourne, Australia and Stanford University. She is Director of the Peritoneal Dialysis Unit and co-director of the Renal-Rheumatology Lupus Clinic at the University Health Network in Toronto.

Professor Savulescu is engaged in research, education and stimulating open public discussion around the ethical issues which arise in every day life and which are related to the changes in society, particularly those related to technological advancement. He has worked broadly in the ethics of science and medicine and his main current research interests are the ethics of the new biosciences: cloning, stem cells, genetics, artificial reproduction and neuroscience.

Previously, he was Editor of the Journal of Medical Ethics, the highest impact factor journal in medical and applied ethics. He was Director of the Ethics of Genetics Unit at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute, Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne, Australia. He was also Director of the Bioethics Program at the Centre for the Study of Health and Society at the University of Melbourne and the Chair of the Department of Human Services, Victoria, Ethics Committee. He was also Head of the Melbourne-Oxford Stem Cell Collaboration, devoted to examining the ethical implications of cloning and embryonic stem cell research.

Julian Savulescu is qualified in medicine, bioethics and analytic philosophy. He has published over 100 articles in journals such as the British Medical Journal, Lancet, Australasian Journal of Philosophy, Bioethics, the Journal of Medical Ethics, American Journal of Bioethics, Medical Journal of Australia and Philosophy, Psychiatry and Psychology. He is currently director of the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics and director of the Program on Ethics and the New Biosciences in the James Martin 21st Century School.



Associate Professor Matthias Kretzler

Matthias Kretzler graduated from the University of Heidelberg and received his postgraduate training at the University of Michigan and Munich. He currently is an associate professor at the University of Michigan. His research is focused on the mechanism of glomerular failure and molecular diagnostics using renal biopsies.


Awards

BMS Young Investigator Award
To be eligible applicants must be at an early stage of their career, age < 40y and enrolled in a higher degree (or just submitted). Eligibility must be confirmed by the research supervisor. Abstracts can be related to basic science or clinical research. Nominated abstracts (only 1 per investigator) will be ranked and a maximum of 6 will be selected for presentation.

KHA Clinical Nephrology Award
Oral presentation, open to all registrants.

AMGEN Basic Science Award
Oral presentation. This award is to highlight good basic science research and is open to all registrants regardless of the phase of their career.

CREED Awards
Best (2) dialysis-related presentations - oral or poster. Prize is a trip to present at the Indonesian Society ASM in 2006.

Best Poster Awards
Presented to the best basic science and clinical poster. Open to all registrants.

AMGEN Rural Practitioners Award
Awarded to a rural physician.

To be considered for an award the presenter MUST be a current financial member of the ANZSN, with the exception of the CREED Awards.
