Invited SpeakersProfessor Phil Barker Professor Phil Barker![]() Phil Barker’s nursing career stretches back over thirty years. Starting out as a nursing assistant ‘to pay off his debts,’ he became one of the country’s first nurse psychotherapists, one of the first nurse clinicians to gain a PhD and our first professor of psychiatric nursing practice, at Newcastle University. Given an honorary doctorate at the Oxford Brookes University in 2001, he has long been both a distinctive and controversial figure in nursing. The author of 14 books - often in collaboration with others - he developed the Tidal Model, which has been adopted by mental health nurses in numerous countries. Earlier this year, he decided to give up his post at Newcastle to concentrate on writing, lecturing and not to mention returning to his first love, painting. Anne Deveson![]() Anne Deveson is a writer, broadcaster and documentary film-maker with a long involvement in human rights issues. Her films and books have won national and international awards, including three United Nations Media Peace Prize citations. A natural communicator, Anne’s warmth and humour help convey her strong message of hope and inspiration. Steven Elsom![]() Stephen Elsom is a senior lecturer in mental health nursing at Monash University. His mental health nursing career spans over 25 years and includes extensive experience in clinical practice and education. Stephen is the coordinator of Monash University’s postgraduate mental health nursing programs. In this role he worked with colleagues to develop and deliver the world’s first postgraduate mental health nursing program to use computer mediated communication as an integral component of curriculum delivery.
