Abstract for presentation at Australian and New Zealand College of Mental Health Nurses 32nd Annual International Conference

Pre-Clinical Intervention in Forensic Mental Health

  • Rik Koopman, GGZ Drenthe, The Netherlands
  • Mrs José van Breukelen, The Netherlands
  • Mr John Struik, The Netherlands
  • To follow-up on our presentation " Dutch Forensic Laws; A Mental Health Nurses Dilemma", Canberra 2004, the presenters will focus on one judicial measure "Her Majesty's Pleasure (TBS)".
In 2001 a rapport called "Pre-Clinical Intervention" was presented to the Dutch Justice Department to shorten the length of stay in a Forensic Psychiatric Hospital. The only judicial measure that would benefit from this was the above-mentioned title.
On an annual basis magistrates in The Netherlands convict well over 300 people to a TBS sentence. With the introduction of Pre-Clinical Intervention the Dutch Justice Department and Department of Health aim to shorten a persons waiting time in prison and treatment period in hospital.
With the aid of two clinical cases the presenters will show how the new systems works. This presentation will highlight the advantages and disadvantages, like accessibility to Mental Health Services, of this Forensic Mental Health intervention. The prominent role of Mental Health Nurses and other Mental Health Professionals are the focus of this presentation.
