Canberra - Your Host City

Canberra sometimes called 'the bush capital' because of the pockets of bushland reserve which extend almost to the city centre and because more than half our land is classifi ed as national park or nature reserve. Our national government sits here. The highest court of the land sits here. Many of the important monuments in the country are here, and they're visited by millions of Australian and international visitors every year.

Canberra is a young capital in a young country, but it does have parallels with other leading cities of the world. For example, Canberra, like Paris, is a planned city. Just as the Baron Haussmann laid out the boulevards of the French capital in the time of the Empire, or as the French architect L'Enfant designed Washington to be a showpiece of civic architecture, so Canberra's streets were laid out in accordance with a grand scheme. Like Washington's Capital, our Parliament House occupies the central hill, with the city planned around dramatic north/south and east/west axes.

A good way to get a feeling for the city is to take a walk around Lake Burley Griffi n. You can cross the lake by means of the two main bridges. It takes about an hour and you pass many of Canberra's main buildings along the way. On the north shore of the lake, the National Capital Exhibition Centre has many of Burley Griffi n's original plans on display, together with a model of the city as it is today - great for getting your bearings. As the Convention Centre is located in the heart of Canberra's attractions and facilities, it is an excellent opportunity for your family to enjoy the city with you.

The Floriade Festival

Canberra's Commonwealth Park comes alive for the Floriade festival from 18 September - 17 October 2004. Entry into the festival is free and organisers recommended you make several visits to fully enjoy the array of flowers, entertainment, displays and demonstrations. Commonwealth Park is only a five minute walk from Canberra's city centre making the Floriade festival a fun option during your visit to Canberra.
