José Ramos-Horta Nobel Peace Prize co-laureateFor almost a quarter of a century, José Ramos-Horta has criss-crossed the globe lobbying for the freedom of East Timor. Together with his compatriot and friend, Bishop Carlos, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1996. Before leaving East Timor only days before the Indonesian invasion in 1974, he worked for the media and, since then, has worked with the media, foreign governments and international organisations seeking support for the right to self-government. In 1991 he was appointed to succeed Professor Brian Davies as the second Cato Prefessor of Pyschiatry at the University of Melbourne. In that role he is Head of the University of Melbourne Department of Psychiatry. In 1996 Professor Singh was appointed as Associate Dean (International), responsible for international matters in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. He has published extensively in the psychiatric literature and has co-edited two books, ie.
